It is designed for a senior couple for their retiring life in a rural village in Fujian province. The senior couple has two daughters and a granddaughter. Most of the time, the house only has the senior couple living there. Only during vacations, their daughters' family and the granddaughter would come back and live with them.  The site is only about 6 meters wide facing the south, which has lots of constraints in daylighting and natural ventilation. As a result, a 1.8 x 1.5-meter patio is designed regardless of the couple's wish to have more space for rooms. After it is built, they are very happy with daylighting and natural ventilation. Meanwhile, because the patio was in between the living room and dining room, the ground floor layout became very flexible.
